AIR Niugini’s Balus Dart Association was among ten teams representing regional airlines and airports that participated in the 36th annual South Pacific Airlines Darts Association (SPADA) Tournament in Phuket, Thailand.
Held from 21 to 24 May, the tournament was not only a platform for competition but also aimed at fostering camaraderie, friendly rivalry, and networking among aviation professionals. Established in 1988, this long-standing event features Singles, Doubles, and Team categories.
The Air Niugini team, comprising 28 players, including employees and spouses, competed strongly across all three categories.
Team Captain and Air Niugini Head Chef from the Flight Catering Department, Thomas Molean, highlighted that Air Niugini, as the host airline for this year’s tournament, delivered an exceptional performance.
“Competing against strong teams from airlines such as Qantas, Emirates, and Cathay Pacific, Air Niugini proudly secured the prestigious Friendly Shield Award for 2026, recognizing the best overall performing airline throughout the tournament,” Molean said.
In the Team category, Air Niugini emerged as champions and also secured a third-place finish. In the Women’s Singles division, the airline claimed both the Female Trophy and the Female Singles Plate. In the Blind Doubles category, the team captured the Blind Doubles Trophy and an additional third-place trophy.
Individual performances further highlighted the depth of talent within the team. Notably, Team Captain Mr. Molean achieved the coveted “Big Fish” award for the highest checkout of 170—marking a historic milestone as the first Air Niugini and Papua New Guinean player in 36 years to achieve this feat in SPADA history.
Richard Pomeleu recorded the highest number of 180s with four, followed by Jonathan Maino with two, alongside Peter Pomeleu and Samuel Kusunan.
During the awards presentation held in Port Moresby last week, Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Alan Milne, congratulated the team on their outstanding achievements.
“We are incredibly proud of our team’s performance, which showcased not only skill and determination but also the camaraderie that defines our culture. Events like these strengthen bonds within our industry, foster lasting friendships, and exemplify the true spirit of teamwork.
“Congratulations to all our players and to everyone who contributed to making this event a memorable success. We look forward to participating in next year’s tournament and continuing to build these valuable connections,” Mr. Milne said.
Air Niugini also extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participating teams, supporters, sponsors, the Phuket venue, and the SPADA organizing committee for their dedication in delivering a successful and enjoyable tournament.
