ONE Pacific Airways and Naoero Airlines are exploring a potential commercial and operational partnership aimed at improving air connectivity across the Pacific, with talks covering passenger services, cargo, maintenance and airline systems.
South Pacific Airways Ltd, trading as One Pacific Airways, and Naoero Air Corporation, trading as Naoero Airlines, said discussions held in Singapore examined areas where their operations could complement each other.
Potential cooperation includes coordinated flight schedules, passenger connections, ticketing and online booking systems, cargo services, aircraft maintenance, operational support and other commercial arrangements.
The talks remain preliminary, with no binding commercial agreement announced.
One Pacific Airways Founder and President Chih Yuan Wang said the discussions were centred on practical opportunities capable of benefiting both carriers.
“We see opportunities for the two airlines to work together in a practical and commercially focused way,” Wang said.
“Our discussions have been focused on identifying areas where we can complement each other and create better connectivity and commercial opportunities.”
Naoero Airlines Chairman Charleston Deiye described the discussions as a positive opportunity to examine areas where cooperation could strengthen the airlines' operations.
“We are looking at practical areas of cooperation that can provide commercial benefits to both airlines and, where appropriate, improve connectivity for our passengers and communities,” Deiye said.
The talks come as Pacific island airlines continue to operate across one of the world's most geographically dispersed aviation markets. Small populations, long distances between islands, high operating costs and limited route frequencies make regional air connectivity particularly challenging.
Naoero Airlines, the national carrier associated with the Republic of Nauru, provides an important aviation link between Nauru and destinations across the central and South Pacific. Cooperation with another Pacific carrier could potentially expand connecting opportunities without requiring each airline to operate every sector independently.
Any partnership between One Pacific Airways and Naoero Airlines could also create opportunities in freight, an important part of Pacific aviation where air services carry time-sensitive goods and supplies between island economies and major regional centres.
Both airlines stressed, however, that discussions are still focused on developing a possible framework rather than announcing specific routes, schedules or joint services.
Further negotiations will be required before commercial arrangements are confirmed, and any agreement would remain subject to regulatory and government approvals in the jurisdictions involved.
The airlines said discussions would continue, with specific commercial commitments to be announced as they progress.
