MARCELLINO Pipite, First Political Advisor (PA) to the Minister of Trade, says there is growing potential for the establishment of direct flights between Nadi in Fiji and Pekoa Airport in Santo later this year, as the Government continues efforts to strengthen trade, exports, and economic development in Vanuatu.
Speaking on the matter, Pipite said the government’s vision is to create more opportunities for local products to reach overseas markets through both sea and air transportation. He explained that improving connectivity is important for farmers, exporters, and local businesses seeking faster and more reliable access to international markets.
The First PA commented on the recent opening of the Brisbane–Pekoa flight route, with services operating on Tuesdays and Saturdays, describing it as a positive development for the country’s export sector. According to Pipite, the flights now provide opportunities for fresh Vanuatu products to be transported overseas more efficiently, particularly agricultural produce and other local goods.
Pipite said discussions are also progressing regarding a possible direct air link between Fiji and Santo, noting that Fiji has a strong aviation network with many available aircraft. He said such a route would allow easier exchange of crops and goods between the two countries while also supporting tourism, trade, and business growth in the northern region of Vanuatu.
He revealed that negotiations and planning discussions are already underway, although formal leader-to-leader talks have not yet begun. However, he expressed confidence that once official discussions commence, the project could quickly become a reality.
Pipite further stated that the Government aims to see the initiative materialise within the year as part of broader plans to expand economic opportunities and improve regional connections.
He also stressed that the Government’s declaration of Santo as Vanuatu’s economic hub has already opened doors for greater investment and faster development on the island. Pipite said Santo continues to show strong potential for growth, particularly in agriculture, tourism, and trade.
According to Pipite, if Port Vila continues to face ongoing challenges, development efforts may increasingly shift towards Santo to ensure economic progress continues in the country.
He acknowledged that while many people may not always see the work being carried out behind the scenes, ministers and government officials are actively working to attract development opportunities and strengthen the economy.
Pipite called on the people of Vanuatu to stand together with the Government in supporting development initiatives aimed at improving communities and islands throughout the country.
