FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PNG Air advises that an operational incident occurred involving one of its ATR 72-600 aircraft at Goroka Airport on Monday, 25 May 2026 at approximately 10:31 AM.
During the take-off roll, prior to the aircraft becoming airborne, the flight crew initiated a rejected take-off in response to a large flock of birds crossing the runway. At approximately 70 knots, maximum braking was applied in accordance with approved PNG Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) procedures and operational protocols. As a result of the maneuver, the aircraft sustained two deflated tires on the left main landing gear.
No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.
The Pilot in Command (PIC) acted in strict compliance with CASA procedures, mitigating the risk of bird ingestion into the engines, which could have caused significant damage or an in-flight shutdown. The PIC’s decision reflects PNG Air’s commitment to operational discipline and the paramount importance of passenger and crew safety
PNG Air maintains robust and recurrent training programs for its flight crews, consistent with CASA requirements. The crew’s effective response in Goroka demonstrates the strength of these programs and PNG Air’s ongoing commitment to safety and operational excellence.
The aircraft remains secured on the runway under the supervision of PNG Air and airport authorities. A rescue team is being deployed this afternoon and will arrive in Goroka to commence recovery operations, with the objective of returning the aircraft to service by mid-morning tomorrow, 26 May.
PNG Air regrets any inconvenience caused to the travelling public in and out of Goroka.
PNG Air reaffirms that the safety and wellbeing of passengers, crew, and stakeholders remain as its highest priority. All necessary procedures are being followed to safely resolve the situation. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
