Air Niugini’s fleet modernisation set to boost PNG connectivity, chairman tells EU–PNG business forum

AIR Niugini Board Chairman Mr Karl Yalo participated in the EU–Papua New Guinea Business Forum panel on Digital Transformation and Connectivity last week, joining leaders from the telecommunications, digital, SME and transport sectors to discuss practical solutions to PNG’s connectivity challenges.

During the panel, Mr Yalo highlighted Air Niugini’s ongoing fleet transformation program, including the introduction of the new Airbus A220 aircraft, as a key enabler of improved connectivity across Papua New Guinea. The new fleet will deliver greater fuel efficiency, increased reliability and enhanced range, allowing the airline to service more destinations and operate more consistently across PNG. This is expected to strengthen domestic and regional links, reduce travel times, and improve the movement of people, goods, and essential services across the country.

Mr Yalo emphasized that aviation remains a critical pillar of national connectivity in Papua New Guinea, where geography and limited land transport infrastructure make air travel essential for economic participation, social inclusion, and service delivery. The modernization of the fleet will significantly improve operational performance, passenger experience, and network reach—supporting tourism, trade, and investment while linking rural communities to urban centres.

He also outlined key challenges impacting the growth and efficiency of the aviation sector in PNG. These include high operating costs driven by fuel prices and infrastructure constraints, weather-related disruptions, maintenance and airport capacity limitations, and the need for continued investment in aviation infrastructure. Additionally, connectivity gaps remain in underserved regions where consistent and affordable access is still a challenge.

Mr Yalo reaffirmed that addressing these issues will require coordinated efforts across government, industry, and development partners. Strengthening partnerships between aviation, telecommunications, and digital sectors will be vital to building a more resilient and connected PNG.
